FLY FISHING'S
UPDATES By Fran Betters

AUGUST FISHING UPDATE
First off, I want to apologize for the extended time between updates on
this web site. It has been a phenomenal year of fishing on the West
Branch of the Ausable and the fly sales and rod sales have kept me
unusually busy during my year back after leasing the shop last season. I
have been working well into the late night hours nearly every day.
Tying about 150 custom flies a day and custom rod sales averaging one a
day hasn't given me much time for anything else. This year's fishing in
July and into August has been the best I've seen in my 36 years of
operating the Adirondack Sport Shop. There have been no slow periods on
the stream and the water temperature at this writing is still in the low
to mid sixties. The need to resort to fishing the tiny midges and
tricos hasn't been necessary this season. The fish are still taking
good on the Ausable Wulffs, the Haystack patterns, the golden caddis and
large size 10 dry stoneflies. Lots of large fish are still being taken
in the late evening hours. The Isonychia Bicolors are beginning to
come off in the late afternoon and dark Haystacks, Isonychia parachutes
are beginning to produce well now. Pocket water, riffles and fast water
runs are the most productive sections of the river to fish.
If you are fishing in the Adirondacks, keep in mind that the Adirondack
Sport Shop is the only shop where you can get the original patterns of
the Ausable Wulff, the Haystacks and the Usual, patterns that I have
developed. Other shops sell copies with the wrong color bodies and
tails. A lot of these copies come from overseas and do not hold up well.
I also want to point out that my custom fly rods are not available at
any other shop in the region. If you have purchased one at some other
shop, it may be one that does not carry a full warranty. There are
several reasons for this which pertain to the leasing of my shop for the
1999 season. If you think you have one of them, please call me and I
will discuss the situation with you and explain it thoroughly. I am
always available at 518-946-2605, my shop number. All of my custom rods
are registered and numbered, making it easy for me to track them.
I would also like to point out that the only web sight for the
Adirondack Sport Shop is the one that you are presently at. No one else
should be claiming any right to this name whatsoever as I have NEVER
sold this name to ANYONE.
For those wishing up to date stream information, you can still call me
at 518- 946-2605. We can take your orders for flies by phone or e-mail
or sign you up for one of our guided or instructional trips on the
river. We now have four licensed guides and five certified instructors
and anyone wanting free casting lessons can stop in at any time for a
free casting lesson or try out one of the many rods in stock.
REMEMBER: September into mid October is the best fishing month of the
year on the Adirondack streams. Productive patterns for the remainder
of August are as follows: The AuSable Wulff, Golden Caddis in sizes 14
and 16, smaller Haystack patterns, grasshopper, parachute olives and
small gray Wulffs and large dry stoneflies.
